Golf in Cumbria – the Lake District

Cumbria - The Lake District is often described as the most beautiful corner of England with its scenic lakes and breathtaking mountains.

There are forests and rivers, quiet country roads and cosy pubs, houses steeped in legends and delightful country gardens.

In fact, there is something for everyone - even golfers.

Golf in Cumbria has a long history, dating from the establishment in 1872 of Furness Golf Club, the sixth oldest in England.

The county has produced one of the finest women players of all time, as well as Ryder Cup and Walker Cup stars.

This strong playing heritage is currently maintained by extensive coaching ranging from young beginners to the elite county playing squad.

But the greatest glory of Cumbrian Golf is its rich variety of courses.

They include wooded parkland, often beside rivers; moorland, on fell-sides and in the bottoms; and classic links land beside the sea.

They cater for all tastes and degrees of skill, from the humblest pay and play holiday courses to the finest championship links.

The common factor in all of them is the beautiful Cumbrian countryside, with backdrops of fell and dale, river and tarn.

WINDERMERE GOLF COURSE

One of the many superb courses in Cumbria is at Windermere, situated in the beautiful heart of the Lake District with spectacular views over England's longest lake and the surrounding fells.

The course has been dubbed "Gleneagles in miniature" and is a popular choice for both social and competitive golf.

A nine-hole course was created at Cleabarrow Falls, Windermere, in 1891.

There were 34 gentleman members with ladies being admitted a year later.

Built of Lakeland stone, the club house provides spectacular views over the surrounding fells.

The spacious first floor lounge and bar, with balcony overlooking the course and surrounding countryside, is the perfect place to sit back, relax and enjoy a drink after a hard day's golfing.
