Chester and Cheshire

Soak in the atmosphere of the historic city of Chester, created by an abundance of black & white buildings set in a circuit of glorious city walls, the most complete in the country. Chester's crowning glory is the 13th century Rows - two tiers of shops running along the main streets, offering a unique and sophisticated shopping experience.

A leisurely walk along the finest city walls in Britain will take you past most of the city's delights including the stunning Eastgate Clock and the 1000-year-old Cathedral, a haven of reflective tranquillity in a lively, bustling, cosmopolitan centre. The biggest archaeological dig in Britain is currently underway at the 2000-year-old Roman Amphitheatre; there is architectural splendour to enjoy at every turn.

The lush countryside of Cheshire is peppered with stately homes, award winning 'Gardens of Distinction' and chic market towns featuring characteristic black and white half-timbered buildings.

Tatton Park near Knutsford is one of Britain's finest Georgian manors, with acres of parklands and formal gardens, a perfect attraction to enjoy in every season, and the host of the RHS Flower Show in July. Nearby Arley Hall and Gardens near Northwich, with its stunning herbaceous borders holds a Country Fair and Horse Trials in May.

For super chic in super villages and towns, breeze into Tarporley, Nantwich, Knutsford and Wilmslow where sophisticated shopping, fine cuisine and contemporary pleasures ensure an afternoon of indulgence and fine delights. Quality local produce is not hard to come by in Cheshire with many farm shops and local producers of ice cream, meats and of course cheese in the region. The gourmet food and drink festivals held throughout the year are a must for foodies.

For a rural escape Cheshire is a fantastic choice, relax in one of the Spa hotels, enjoy a meander along one of the many canals on a narrow boat or simply walk or cycle the paths and country lanes through forests and the peaks and plains.
