Memorable Moment
Don't miss the fir tree that sits outside the clubhouse. It was presented to Hesketh's Arnold Bentley at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, where he led the British team to a Gold medal, much to Adolf Hitler's chagrin. Arnold Bentley, along with his brother Harry, became two of the most illustrious golfing siblings in the amateur game, and their achievements are commemorated in the Bentley Room in Hesketh's clubhouse. Henry Cotton once set a course record of 68 during a visit to the club in 1932.
Star Anecdote
"I once went to a stag night at Hesketh, but I don't recall much about it..."
Local van driver Ashton's preparation for Open qualifying in 1998 was modest. Nonetheless, he hit a magnificent second round 71 in high winds, and came within two strokes of an Open place play-off against professionals Larry Mize and Gordon Brand Jnr.
