Memorable Moment
One of S&A's most dramatic moments came during the 1933 Ryder Cup when the US, captained by Walter Hagan, were defeated on the last green by JH Taylor's Great Britain. In the final game, Shute of the USA and Easterbrook of Great Britain reached the final hole all-square, the USA needing just a half to retain the trophy. Shute missed a putt of six feet for par, and Easterbrook holed a two-footer to take the Cup.
Star Anecdote
"The 1933 Ryder Cup was lost on etiquette. I was talking to the Duke of Windsor at the vital moment. Denny Shute was on the 18th green - I had to go and tell him to two-putt to retain the Cup. But you don't excuse yourself from royalty. I had to stand and watch as Denny threeputted and the Cup slipped away."
