Memorable Moment

For about ten years, Cecilia 'Cecil' Leitch was by far the best lady golfer in the world, winning the Ladies Championship a record four times. Cecil never had a golfing lesson, and claimed she had learnt her golf under natural conditions, without the need for "artificial" help. After Cecil retired from championship golf in 1927, she sailed around her beloved Silloth course in 66, in a match against a local member. Her caddie, Tommy Wallace, described the round as "perfect golf".

Star Anecdote

The late Lord Whitelaw, known throughout his political career as Willie, was a keen golfer and remained President of Silloth until his death in 1999. A fine player in his youth, he served as captain of the R&A in 1970, an honour he was more proud of than his achievements in politics.
