Memorable Moment

In 1961 came Arnold Palmer, and with him undoubtedly the renaissance of the Championship as a truly international event. Fierce gales and storms led to the cancellation of Friday's last two rounds and a directive from the R&A that the Championship would have to be completed on Saturday. Palmer's play in the gale in the second round was considered his best and the plaque on the 16th fairway was erected to commemorate an awesome second shot played directly into the teeth of the wind.

Star Anecdote

''I hope I'll always be remembered for holing out with my sand wedge at 18 in the last round of the Open in 1998. I'd pulled my drive and almost lost the ball. I fluffed my recovery, and knew I needed to make par to stand any chance of winning. I hit the wedge pure, it bounced where I'd pictured it and hopped in.''
