Memorable Moment
In 2001, Germany's Alex Cejka belied Hillside's tough reputation by firing a course record 65 in the 2001 Open qualifying tournament. The Czechborn player, who moved to Germany aged 10, had pulled out of the Scottish Open to compete at Hillside, but his gamble paid off. He took his good form from Hillside into the Open and gave leaders Ian Woosnam, David Duval and Bernhard Langer a run for their money in the early stages at Royal Lytham.
Star Anecdote
"The Open qualifying course at Hillside in 1998 was the hardest course I've ever played in my life - even harder than Carnoustie in 1999 when no one broke par on the first day."
