Formby has made its reputation as a top amateur course, hosting the Amateur Championship on three occasions. Those present in 1984 witnessed two genuine stars of the future battle it out, as young Spaniard José Maria Olazabal kept his nerve to beat Colin Montgomerie in the final, and earn a place in the Masters the following year.

Star Anecdote

I was heavily beaten by José Maria Olazabal when we played the final of the Amateur Championship at Formby in 1984. He won 5 and 4 and I haven't slept much since!
