History
A challenging links golf course set in a magnificent pine forest, Formby is one of the Golf Coast's classic courses. The wind from the Irish Sea provides a formidable challenge, and play often varies from day to day. In the early 1970s, construction of new docks in Liverpool altered the course of the River Mersey and the shoreline near the eighth and ninth greens was seriously eroded away, so new holes were constructed. Formby has made its name as a major venue for womens' golf and has an independent course, Formby Ladies Golf Club, within the boundary of the main course.
Site of Special Scientific Interest
Formby Golf Club has been declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest, with the dunes surrounding the course a designated conservation area. Despite its exposure to the elements, the course is kept in fine condition all year round, with firm greens and excellent fairways. Accuracy and concentration is required, with the heather and rough forming a natural boundary.
