Describe the course for us...

The trees on the course are pine trees and it's a year-round course. In seven years here I think we've had maybe one or two days when the course has been closed. You're never playing from temporary tees or on temporary greens. In the summer, the fairways can get scorched by the sun and the greens look like oases in the distance!

What advice would you give someone playing Formby for the first time?

Accuracy off the tee at Formby is essential. The bunkers on the course are primarily pot bunkers and if you go in them, you're not going to get very far when you come back out. I'd say you can advance your ball maybe thirty or forty yards on average, so usually you're looking at shot dropped if you go in one. You're better off being straight than long here.

What have been your favourite moments on the course?

It's fantastic here in August, really superb. Going out early in the morning as the sun comes up, or playing late at sunset and seeing the sun go down over the sea is absolutely fantastic.

What's your favourite part of the job?

I really enjoy meeting the thousands of visitors that we get, people who come from all over the world to play links golf. I like talking to people who've come from France, Germany, the USA or wherever, who've just played their first links round and hearing about their experiences.
