With its rich culture, unique scenery, stunning country house hotels and award winning restaurants, you would think Cumbria - The Lake District had it all. But add to this a reputation as one of the UK's finest food destinations, an unrivalled range of outdoor activities and an assortment of interesting visitor attractions and then you start to get the full picture.

Voted Britain's most romantic destination, Cumbria - the Lake District, home to the likes of William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, boasts 16 stunning lakes (at 10 and a half miles long, Windermere is England's longest) and the five tallest mountains in England (Scafell being the highest at 3,000 feet). This inspiring haven is also the country's best-loved adventure playground. There are 2,175 miles (3,500km) of public paths from which to explore the area and it is no surprise that walking remains one of the most popular outdoor activities in the Lake District. However, the area is also the birthplace of mountaineering and offers a host of other exciting activities from boating, cycling and horse-riding to ghyll-scrambling, cross-country skiing and ice climbing.

The bustling towns of Kendal, Keswick, Ambleside, Bowness-on-Windermere and Ulverston are a contrast to the peace of the natural landscape, but are as much a part of the Lake District experience as are the mountains and lakes. A visit to Carlisle, Cumbria's only city, is a must. A former Roman settlement (nearby Hadrian's Wall is a stark reminder of the days of the Roman Empire), the city is famous for its medieval castle and cathedral aswell as its contemporary shopping and vibrant nightlife.

Of course, you'll need something to satisfy your appetite. With four twinkling Michelin stars, the Lake District has an almost unrivalled reputation for food and drink. From cosy country pubs, stylish cafes and tearooms to award-winning restaurants, there is something for every time of the day!

For young adventurers, there's an underwater aquarium, the Batmobile, Peter Rabbit and the world's longest pencil - the only decision is which to see first! Stately homes and inspirational gardens can also be found across the region.

Wherever you choose to stay you can be sure of a warm welcome, great service and some of the most picturesque surroundings to be found anywhere. From large, luxurious hotels and cosy B&Bs to well equipped caravan and camping parks, comfortable self-catering cottages and tourist hostels or camping barns...you can even stay on a farm.
